Bullying: How to get through it…

Let’s all raise our hands if we have been bullied at least once in our lives!          * The whole world raises their hands*  Uh huh, that’s what we thought! Girls it is now so common and normal for us to hear about someone being bullied, or for us to be bullied ourselves. Do you remember when it used be a thing that you would just hear about, or read about…now it’s everywhere! We’ve had girls ask us in the past, how it has become more and more normal… well it may be just that, the more people that bully others and get away with it, the more normal it seems. Girls, do you think people that are happy with themselves, high

teen confidence, self esteem, anxiety, body image

“My low self-esteem is starting to interfere with my life and prevent me from doing things I love. How can I learn to worry about myself less?” “People are just waiting for me to mess up so they can spread gossip and lies about me” “I was bullied at my last school and since moving schools it’s happening again. Why can’t I make friends? Is there something wrong with me?” These are the deep, honest, real thoughts coming from teenage girls. These are actual statements from the 11-14 year olds that contributed to our Girl Talk suggestions box when asked what they would like to discuss in our classes. They are typical, average kids who are going to school and have good families and appear

Benefits of Meditation for Teens

As we all know, the teenage years are some of the most stressful and confusing times of our lives. There are so many factors contributing to the way teens feel from their school environment, friendships, family life, to the biological changes going on in their bodies. Learning to manage these stressors and find balance can be extremely difficult, for both teens and parents. At standing Strong we believe in using natural alternatives to ease the physical, emotional and biological challenges of the teen years. This is where meditation comes in. It is more than just sitting quietly, it is a development of mindful awareness. What specific benefits can mediation provide? Improves concentration. According to studies conducted, meditation can actually improve how quickly and clearly brain cells communicate with one another

Dr Vanessa Thiele I am a Psychologist, Health Coach, former Personal Trainer and Kung Fu instructor. I also have two little ones at home, and between all the nappy changes and toddler tantrums I like to write and fantasise about wearing nice clothes again. I believe with absolute conviction that every single one of us has the potential to be amazing and have a fulfilling and fantastic life. All we need is the right guidance, knowledge and support along our own personal journey. Life certainly isn’t easy, especially for teenagers. I had so many awkward and embarrassing moments growing up that it’s almost hard to know where to start, but one that stands out in my mind was the time I accidentally did something really terrible

Parents Standing Strong Workshop

**No more tickets available** “Many a man/woman wishes he/she were strong enough to tear a telephone book in half – especially if he/she has a teenage daughter”.  ~Guy Lombardo Raising girls is tough. There is no other word to describe it. The tears, the tantrums, the arguments, the yelling, the silent treatment, the emotions, the list goes on. For many parents the teen years are the most difficult times they will ever experienced as a parent. Everything changes. What was once one of the most beautiful relationships you’ve ever had can turn into the most difficult, hurtful, frustrating, heartbreaking and challenging. For many parents this time can feel confusing, isolating, disheartening, and at times completely overwhelming. Parents can be left questioning, what did I do wrong? Am I a bad

Body-Image Holiday Workshop

For many girls the simple act of looking at themselves in the mirror each morning is almost too much to handle. For many, their morning routine begins with feeling uncomfortable, ugly, fat, too big, too small, thinking their skin is too pale, too dark, their hair is too thick, too fine, too curly, too straight… The list goes on. For most girls, this negative and often painful morning ritual sets the standard for their day. For many girls it feels impossible to think of something they truly like about their bodies. This negative self-image can lead to huge implications including low confidence and self-esteem, unhealthy eating habits, stress and anxiety, low self-worth, high risk behaviour including drinking alcohol and even sexualised behaviour. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of resources to help

Standing Strong Workshop

On Sunday 15th March we held our first Self-Defence Workshop at Standing Strong Total Wellness Club for Girls. It was a fantastic day with 20 girls learning how to protect, defend and stand up for themselves. The girls enjoyed the session so much they have asked us to add a boxing/martial arts class to our regular timetable. We think this is a great idea and it’s something we are now working on. To see what the girls got up to check out the video below. Also, if you are interested in our next workshop make sure you sign up to our Standing Strong Newsletter so you don’t miss out on all our updates!
