Do you ever feel as though when you’re emotional (sad, lonely, anxious, angry or anything in between) it takes over your whole head and body? It is so common for teen girls, and anyone for that matter to feel overwhelmed with emotions at times…you are not alone!
At times when our emotions become overwhelming, we may feel as though we don’t have control over what we say or even our actions. You may get this feeling of helplessness, or like you are outside of your body looking in on what you’re doing, but can’t do anything about it.
We’ve put together some tips for you on how to deal with this overwhelming feeling:
- Remove yourself from any environment that may be making you feel these overwhelming emotions (this may mean physically distancing yourself from people). “Take a bathroom break”, “go outside to get some fresh air”
- Breathe…deeply. We often forget how important our breath is…get all of that oxygen into your body! Breathe in through your nose, hold it for a few seconds then breathe out through your mouth.
- Treat yourself kindly. Go take care of yourself girl! Do things that calm you, make you happy, distract you even. Make a cup of tea, pick up your favourite book, listen to your favourite artist, watch your favourite tv show or movie, go for a walk outside, take a nice long bath, speak to an adult you trust or even go for a run. For every girl, there is a different way to deal with these emotions!
- Last, but certainly not least…LET THOSE EMOTIONS OUT!!! Crying is a necessary part of those emotions leaving your body! Find a safe place, like the shower or your bed and just let it all out! We often find that the more we try to keep those emotions in, the more overwhelming they become. As teens we may get judged or encouraged not to express our emotions! Ignore that, you find your safe space and let those emotions out!

Just know, that you are not alone in sometimes feeling overwhelmed with your emotions, especially in your teen years! Even adults sometimes find themselves in situations where they feel helpless or out of control! The trick is to be able to find YOUR THING, the thing that calms you and brings you back to a good headspace.
