Have you ever met people who always seem to enjoy the small things in life? They always look on the bright side, they are happy and can see the positives in any situation- Most of us know someone like this. Sometimes it can be easy to look at these positive people and think, “they were just born that way”….
The truth is, they choose to be that way.
People who look at life from a positive perspective make the decision everyday to make the most of their situations. They choose to see the good, they choose to laugh, they choose to be positive and they choose to be grateful and appreciative of everything they have.
When I was younger I use to be very negative. I thought all the bad things happened to me. I always focused on the negatives and the things that were going wrong. After learning a lot more about positive thinking, I decided to start seeing if my negative situations had anything to do with the way I was thinking. I decided to start paying more attention to the fun things in my life, I started noticing when people were nice to me, I started realising the great opportunities I was being offered, and the wonderful people I was meeting.
The more I started to focus on the good things, the more grateful I became. I started being appreciative of the small things, kind gestures, sunny days, catching up with friends, compliments. The more I started to appreciate things, the more I realised how much there was to be grateful for. Suddenly I realised I was smiling more often, I was laughing more openly and I was becoming a much happier person.
Looking on the positive side of situations is not always something that comes easy at first, but once you become aware of the way you respond to things you can start choosing how you want to react. Its all about self awareness and taking the time to pay attention to your own thoughts and actions. So here’s a little exercise for you… Today start being aware of every negative thought you have. Once you recognise a negative though try to think of a positive alternative.
For example, if you are talking to a friend and they say something mean about someone, instead of jumping in and agreeing with them, try to come back with a positive comment such as, “yeah its annoying when she does that but maybe she doesn’t realise we don’t like it, maybe we are the only people she has to talk to about it”. Or if you see someone wearing something really strange, instead of thinking they look weird, think how confident they must be and appreciate that we are all different (if we were all the same it would be a very boring place)!
So give this exercise a go and try to start being more aware of your own thoughts and reactions. Start trying to think about the positive side of every situation and start being appreciative of the great things that are happening around you. I promise the more you start being aware of the good things, the more good things you will notice! Give it a go and let me know what happens!!!
